What sort of technology are they using to detect ships?
I’m guessing the other ship is small, has most systems on standby and is tucked in the shadow of the larger freighter?

Interesting question. I’ve always envisioned that they would be using LIDAR or a similar technologies. Nothing as ambiguous as “sensors” like in Star Trek. If anything, they’d probably be using a suite of sensors taking in data from across the electromagnetic spectrum.
